| Statement |
The past few years I have been working on paintings and drawings that explore the figure in water. This show features images using a particular model, Ezra, who I worked with this year. He is the fourteen year old son of good friends in California (land of pools).
Ezra has that not quite boy, not quite man body that often moves self consciously on land but gracefully through water. Once in the water he loses the inhibiting teen awkwardness and you can see him start to play. It is that playfulness and focus in the water that I wanted to capture. The figure is not someone swimming; it is someone defying gravity, flying through alien space.
The entire series of swimming paintings has been a chance for me to use the pool and water as a theme. When I think of water it is with a respect for its importance to life as well as its potential for tragedy. It is that dichotomy that keeps me working with what started out as a fairly simple set of images and has developed into an almost endless supply of problems to challenge me.
