Statement

My work is derived from things as I see 'em. A vision shaped by how and when I live -- the life of an average (?), Single, west coast "girl," born in the 1950's. Exposed to too much TV and commercials and all the products, i.e. furniture, cars, fashion, etc. that I was surrounded by growing up. I may have rejected a lot of that 50's Americana but I can't help thinking it has influenced not only what I do but what it looks like.

I've thumbed my nose up at the June Cleaver/Barbie lifestyle I saw as the expected path growing up -- but at the same time I'm attracted to how everything looked back then. I especially love those big kitchen appliances, not that I use 'em, the toaster being about the extent of my domestic skills. But I love the look of those forms -- full, bulbous chrome devices -- automated, streamlined, elements that defined the machine age, that's what 50's design represents to me. Everything from the cars of that period to the machinery for the little woman in the home looked like it was part of a jet fuselage. It was all kind of slick and sexy -- in an innocent sort of way.

I don't think of myself as overtly feminine in the conventional stereotypical sense -- I mean I don't like to shop, can't cook, rarely wear make-up or a dress yet I see my new work taking on a very feminine apperance. I see it as a pushing of those traits I was attracted to in the 50's: industrial design towards more shapely, curvaceous forms, punctuated by color, pattern, ruffles, and frills.

I remember a "Dick and Jane" story from the first grade in which Dick and Jane visit the farm and see all the big farm machinery used by the men on the farm. Jane feels a little left out till she goes to the kitchen of the farmhouse and sees a dishwasher and shows Dick that girls can use machinery too. Even then, the story burned me up, seemed unfair, and ignited my desire to use "men's machinery." So, now I do. I use all the big boy tools to make my wooden "frilly" furniture.
