| Statement |
| I started working with broken vases when I was still doing production work in California. When you are blowing glass, if you drop it or if it has a crack, it is thrown away. But the way I saw these pieces started to change, and they became valuable to me. Few people supported me at first. In the craft world, breaking glass, painting it, and putting it back together are all wrong things to do. If the glass is broken, it is garbage; if it is painted, it is more than glass and has lost its purity. Within a couple of years, however, I was having enough shows and selling enough work that I was able to open my own studio.
When I start working, I seek to make an ultimate expression of my emotional state. I experiment with shape all the time. A body of work is an exercise until I'm done. I always have to do a group of pieces--I can't do just one. When I am half finished with one piece, I am thinking of the next. Often I have three pieces going at once. By the time I get to the last pieces, I am able to resolve some of the earlier ones and tighten them up. A piece is never really done until it is out the door.
I like the beauty of color and form, and the organic sense of the work, which to me means growth. By combining these qualities, I get hope that there is some sort of connection with me and the universe.
