Alice Corning


Statement
	I began to work with clay in the late 1960s at the Spring Street Studio in Soho, Manhattan. That part of the city was just then coming alive as an artistic center and it was an inspiring place to work.I moved to Mill Valley, California in 1974 and established my own studio. I continue to work there, in both sculptural and functional forms. The figure emerged as a major theme in 1986. I build these pieces slowly, meditatively, pressing together small bits of clay. I like to explore scale with them, making miniature figures as well as massive ones. Each one appears as if born, a unique individual. One of my figures, created in clay, then cast in bronze, has recently been named the prize in perpetuity for the Mill Valley Film Festival. I like to think of these figures going out into the world, encouraging peaceful contemplation.
